Every year, I look forward to the Christmas holiday season. I love decorating a large, beautiful tree, baking delicious, seasonal desserts, going to holiday parties, and spending time with my parents at their farm. Because I’m a singer and a musician, I also like to listen to Christmas music. Sometimes, I listen to holiday tunes for several hours at the time. Whether I’m cleaning my home, driving down the road, or cooking dinner, my mood instantly improves after listening to some of my favorite holiday songs. On this blog, I hope you will gain an appreciation for holiday music. Enjoy!
Many people believe they can learn to play piano independently through the internet, video tutorials, etc. However, if you're serious about learning, your best bet is to get lessons from a trained teacher. Piano lessons will give you many advantages you won't get if you try to learn without help from someone who knows what they're doing.
Learn Music Theory
Learning about music theory is one of the most important things to do when learning an instrument. It will give you the building blocks to understand what you're learning and what you must do to improve. If you get piano lessons, your teacher will explain how music theory works, specifically regarding the piano.
Learn Proper Fingering
When you play piano, you need to move your fingers along the keys in a way that makes sense for the music you're playing. There are fundamental techniques you should learn that make it easier to figure out finger placement on each note you're playing. When you get piano lessons, your teacher will help you understand how it works.
Learn Correct Posture and Hand Positioning
Many people who decide to learn piano without lessons have issues with posture and the angle of their hands while playing. It can cause unnecessary discomfort and make it harder for you to play for long periods without getting sore. It can also worsen your playing because you won't have enough strength in your fingers to play certain notes loud enough.
Avoid Developing Bad Habits
Learning to play piano is similar to learning other skills; if you don't have guidance early on, you'll develop bad habits. Your piano teacher won't only show you how to do things correctly, but they'll also step in and correct you when you make mistakes that can become habits.
Learn How to Practice Productively
Practicing is vital if you want to become a skilled piano player. However, if you don't practice correctly, you can waste a lot of time without improving your playing ability. When you get lessons, your teacher will give you specific exercises to practice to help you improve and prepare for your next class.
Inspiration to Stick With It
One of the biggest reasons to take piano lessons is to be inspired to stick with it. When people learn things independently, it's easy to get discouraged and give up after a while. If you take piano lessons, your teacher will be there when you need them, inspiring you to stick with it and reach your goals.
